Caselli Family Series Blog Tour

We are hosting Ta’mara Hanscom’s blog tour and she has two books to share!  The Caselli Family novels first came to my attention on Twitter. I visited the author’s website and definitely wanted to read at least the first book. I downloaded The Pretender: A Blackguard in Disguise, in November 2017 while deep into my Christmas reading fest.

I was tempted to read it right away, but resisted. I was buried in Christmas stories and needed to wade through them before the season was over. As I flipped the final page of my last holiday novel, I was excited to move on to The Caselli family. Between binging on Hallmark movies and Christmas novels, I was ready for a story with some “meat.”

My official, sort of review.  😆

The Caselli family consisting of two parents, three sons and a baby on the way, emigrated from Italy in 1956. The baby, Tillie was the delight of the family and her brother’s nicknamed her Angel. As she grew up, she became a talented artist whose paintings caught the emotions of the subjects. She was also an obedient Italian daughter, that is until the day she went to a Junior Artist of American competition and became obsessed with Noah, a wild young man with a troubled past and a motorcycle.

Angel returns home full of hope, but soon a misunderstanding breaks her heart and a long time friend vies for her hand.

The interactions of the Caselli family were real as they faced their own challenges. The brothers knew that something was troubling their Angel, but had no idea how to help her. I enjoyed this book and hope to find time to read the next one in the series, Pit of Ambition. I do hope Angel finds true love and happiness!

Now the official blurb:

The Pretender: A Blackguard in Disguise is the first volume of 5 in the family epic series The Caselli Family Series. It begins in South Dakota in 1975 where eighteen-year-olds could order 3.2 beers in a bar and loaded guns were kept under the counter. Frankie Valli sang My Eyes Adored You, and American soldiers returning from Vietnam struggled with their new reality.

It’s within this tumultuous season of American history that Tillie Caselli meets Noah Hansen, and they are never the same again. Their lives were mysteriously intertwined – and had been for many years – yet they had no idea.

From the moment they met, Tillie and Noah wanted to spend the rest of their lives together, but a deliberate omission will keep them apart – and that same omission will be responsible for the escape of a murderer, and a bride’s deception.

These compelling stories are interwoven with Biblical truths and light-hearted, real life events from the author’s own past. Easy to understand and relate to, as well as encouraging.

One of the brothers, Marquette, with his flowing ponytail and larger than life personality captured my curiosity so I asked the author for a character interview.

Character Spotlight Marquette

I was born in what some would consider a shack, but I loved our home in Castellina, Italia, which is located in Chianti. We were poor farmers, but my parents provided good food and clothing. We acquired running water and electricity when I was about ten years of age. My brothers and I used to sleep together in one room, until our parents decided we were old enough and they allowed us to sleep in the barn. We wanted for nothing in those days. But God had so much more planned for us. He knew that the valley could offer us only poverty and wine, and by the time I was fifteen years of age He’d begun the tender creation of our little sister. It was then our father decided to bring us to America.

It was November of 1956 when we made the move, and I could barely speak English. My parents put me in a public school in the heart of the Midwest, and I had to work part-time in their ristorante. I was very depressed at the time because I had left my only true love, Tara, behind in Italia. And after only a month in America we learned that she had died in a terrible train crash in Rome. Those were dark days for me.

I excelled in math as a young man, which is how I broke into the business of investigating. I was challenged with a secret code used by the evil Ponerello family of Sicilia. I broke the code in 1968, shortly after a great earthquake had hit the island. In breaking the code I was able to lead authorities in the capture of thirty-eight of the evil Ponerellos. That single event launched what has been a prosperous and rewarding career for me. And it was also during that very investigation that I learned of the heinous plot to keep me away from my Tara.

I found my Tara, alive and well, in Chicago, and we were married within weeks. She now travels with me wherever I go, and has proven to be an articulate investigator in her own right.

Two of the Ponerellos have never been captured. They elude me still, and that troubles me to my core. I know they are here somewhere in the United States, and I will keep searching for them until I find them.

The second book in the series I haven’t read yet but I hope to read it soon. I miss the Casellis!

Pit of Ambition is the second volume of 5 in the family epic series The Caselli Family Series.

Five years have passed since Noah and Tillie’s “chance” meeting. They’ve married other people by now, and are both beginning their families.

In the pursuit of professional and political success, Alex runs headlong into a pit of pride and ambition…and Giuseppe begins to hate the husband he chose for his daughter.

Alex and Noah are doing business on many fronts, which will bring Noah to town for an unintended meeting with Giuseppe. Tension abounds as he attempts to conceal his daughter’s identity from Noah.

Alex strays when Tillie needs him the most, and it’s Noah who will bring him home. But, instead of learning Tillie’s identity, he connects with her brothers, especially Marquette.

Unbeknownst to Noah, his new foreman is a member of the crime family Marquette has sought since 1968.

I think you will enjoy this except from Pit of Ambition.

Maggie sighed and shook her head as she glanced at the haunting painting that still hung in her bar…It was the spring of 1975, only five years ago, and she had been so beautiful…The name of the painting was Obedience, and it was a very dramatic depiction of a woman, whom Angel had claimed was her mother, with an old horse. Maggie had bought it at an art show from the girl who’d claimed to be Angel. Tucked in the frame was a snapshot Maggie’s sister, Estelle, had taken of Noah and Angel standing together at the bar. That had been her last night in town and Noah had fallen in love. In fact, Angel had agreed to marry him before she left.

Maggie let out her breath as she studied the painting. Noah hasn’t had a drink since you left…you’d be so proud of what he’s done with his life.

Estelle came out of the kitchen and noticed Maggie’s pensive stare.

“Whatcha thinkin’ about, Maggie?” she asked, even though she knew the answer, because Estelle thought about it every day, too.

Maggie slowly shook her head and looked at her sister. “Nothin’, baby.”

Estelle only nodded…Why don’tcha just pray about it, Maggie, and get it over with?

Maggie glanced at the corner booth and shook her head. Mona had met Estelle in the bar once a week for the last two years. They read their Bibles and prayed together, and often invited Maggie to join them. Maggie always refused. She didn’t believe in God and had no desire to waste her time reading about Him. She softly snorted as she watched them…This is the dumbest thing Estelle’s ever done.

BOOK SYNOPSIS
As the son of two famous actors, Coty is used to the unfaltering scrutiny of the media. But even though he’s been in and out of the spotlight his entire life, he is totally unprepared for the public’s harsh judgement when he’s forced to kill a teenager in the line of duty.
Amanda is the love of Coty’s life. She wants to stand by his side and weather his current crisis, but he’s determined to create a distance between them in the hope of protecting her. His biggest fear is that, if the media makes a connection between them, the reporters will turn their focus from him and onto her. That would most certainly bring the media to rehash the lurid scandal that had erupted after the attempted rape of his sister by Amanda’s own deceased brother.
Coty has no intention of letting his problems hurt Amanda. He only wants her happiness, and if that means he has to let her go – then so be it.

EXCERPT

Amanda’s brain felt as if it were filled with cobwebs. The long hours of working nonstop made everything feel fuzzy and uncertain. “Stop making a mountain out of a molehill. I’m not taking advice from a person who got her information about men and women from dirty magazines and porn. You know as much about love as I do, and that amounts to a big fat zero.”

She pulled on her ponytail and sighed. “Coty has been so good to me. I don’t want to ruin our friendship by embarrassing him. If I threw myself at him, I would only confuse things. If he wants this to go farther than a friendship, I’m going to let him make the first move. Until then, we’re friends, and if that’s all it is ever going to be between the two of us, I’ll be content. I have never had anyone who cared about me. No one has ever worried about my health, about my safety or wellbeing. Coty does. With him I feel safe and loved. There is never a moment when we are together that I don’t feel cherished and happy. So, if I have to be his friend, then I will be his friend. If I have to watch him fall in love and get married to someone else, then I’ll watch him fall in love and get married. I’ll wish them nothing but the best of everything. I’ve never known love, but this time with Coty has meant everything to me. If it has to last me a lifetime, I’ll cherish each and every memory forever.”

Barbara didn’t say a thing for several moments before finally sputtering out, “You’re not kidding, are you?”

Amanda didn’t blink. “No. I’m not kidding. You know my past. No one has ever loved me. No one. I would love to be the person Coty falls in love with, but the truth is I never expected to be here doing what I love to do. I never expected to be here with people I love to be with. I appreciate right now that if I suddenly lost it all, I would have this time to look back on, to remember that at one time in my life I had people who cared about me. I could make that last a lifetime, if I had to.”

Friday Reads~Drawn to You

This week’s installment of Friday Reads is brought to you by Liwen Ho, author of the Taking Chances Series.

Liwen HoLiwen Y. Ho works as a chauffeur and referee by day (AKA being a stay at home mom) and a writer by night. In her pre-author life, she received a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Western Seminary, and she loves makeovers of all kinds, especially those of the heart and mind. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her techie husband and their two children, and blogs about her adventures as a recovering perfectionist at www.2square2behip.com.

My favorite part of hosting other authors on my website is getting to know them and sharing them with our readers.  Liwen has just released the third novel in the Taking Chances series, Drawn to You.

  1. Tell our readers why they should choose your novel as their Friday Read.

Because you won’t regret it! 🙂  Reading Drawn To You is a great way to wind down and relax from a busy week. You’ll swoon, laugh, and fall in love with the main characters as they grow to fall for each other.

  1. What is the back story of Drawn to You, what inspired you?

When I was writing the second book in my series, one of the supporting characters, Sam, jumped up and down, insisting that I write the next book about her. If you know Sam, as I’ve gotten to know her, you’ll learn that she doesn’t take no for answer. That’s how she got a whole story dedicated to her and her alter ego, Lucas. I absolutely believe in the theory that opposites attract because my hubby and I are living proof of it. You’ll find bits and pieces of our personalities in Sam and Lucas, and even a scenario involving a dishwasher that was inspired by us (LOL).

  1. Who were your favorite authors as a child and teen.

As a child, I loved reading the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery and later on, the Babysitters Club series by Ann M. Martin, and Sweet Valley High series by Francine Pascal. As a teen, I moved on from romance to mystery when I discovered Mary Higgins Clark’s books.

I loved Anne of Green Gables too and was disappointed when my family made a trip to Nova Scotia and didn’t have time to visit Prince Edward Island.

Imagine a big name author that you love is reading and raving about your book. Choose one of these reactions and explain why.

  1. Freak out and shake all over.
  2. Google everything you can find about your book and the author.
  3. Call everyone you know to share your excitement.
  4. Post immediately to Clean Indie Reads so your friends can freak out with you.
  5. Begin to mentally compose a tweet to tell the world.

Oh my, can I choose all five?! I would definitely do a little dance like I did when I got my first book published, then go on social media and virtually “shout” (in all caps, of course!) the amazing news to anyone and everyone who will listen! And I’d probably look something like this.  🙂

Smiing Camel

I LOVE the picture! Friends Liwen is a funny lady and her novels are fun too. No interview is complete without a blurb.

Drawn To You, Taking Chances Series, Book 3

Can love embrace differences?

Wanted: A man who can handle his alter ego. Quick reflexes recommended.

Feisty and adventurous, art teacher Sam Koo is used to getting what she wants, including talking her way out of traffic tickets. When it comes to money matters though, she’s a lost cause. Her studio is in trouble, and there’s no way of charming herself out of this mess.

Police officer Lucas Choi is the last person she expects to rescue her. Handsome and rule-abiding, he was the best—and worst—part of her high school experience. When they meet a decade later, he’s still on her case and quick to point out her flaws.

Their differences drive each other crazy, but also draw them closer. The attraction is tangible, yet so are Sam’s fears. Will she choose to protect her heart or trust the only man who ever rejected her

I asked Liwen to share an excerpt with us. I don’t know who wins in the exchange below, Firecracker or Squealer.  🙂

“I hope you know you can’t sweet talk your way out of everything, Sammie Koo.”

Sam’s ears perked up. Where had she heard that line before? Pursing her lips, she took a good look at the officer. Jet black hair. High cheekbones. A dimple in his chin. There was something familiar about him, particularly that dimple. If only she could see his eyes. “Do I know you? No one calls me Sammie anymore.” Her eyes roamed over his well-defined chest and over his name tag again. “Choi. Wait a minute. Lucas Choi, is that you?”

The officer lowered his sunglasses onto the bridge of his nose. “Hey, Sammie. It’s good to see you, too.”

Her jaw dropped when she met his gaze. Those eyes. She would recognize them anywhere. Brown irises so light in color that they had flecks of green and gold in them. Once upon a time those eyes, so uncommon for an Asian, made her envious, but now they completely infuriated her. Judging from his haughty expression, she could tell he was taking way too much pleasure in tormenting her. It figures he went into law enforcement. Mr. Goody-Two-Shoes loved nothing more than following the rules and making those who didn’t pay for it.

Not much had changed since the last time they crossed paths, except that she had her hands free today. She looked around for something to throw, settling for a fistful of candy wrappers, and tossed them at him. “How long were you going to mess with me? I can’t believe you let me beg you for mercy! Stop wasting my time. I know you want to write me up, so do it.”

He brushed off an orange Kit Kat wrapper stuck to his pressed shirt. “Hey now, settle down, Firecracker. I could arrest you for assaulting an officer.”

Heat flared from her neck up to her cheeks, likely causing her complexion to match the red highlights in her hair. Oh, how she hated his nickname for her. “Oh, please. Assault you with what—paper cuts? Or maybe the overpowering aroma of chocolate? If you want to arrest me, Squealer, go ahead. It’s not the first time you got me put in handcuffs.”

“Now, now, there’s no need for name-calling, Miss Koo. We’re both adults here.”

“You started it.” Sam wrinkled her nose at how juvenile she sounded. Why did he have to bring out the worst in her? And how did he manage to look so cool and composed? It wasn’t fair. She swiped at some wisps of hair that were stuck to her damp forehead. “I don’t know why you enjoy tormenting people. What did I ever do to you?”

“Someone has a short-term memory. Need I remind you that you left me to do all the experiments in chem class and then tried to copy my answers? We weren’t assigned as lab partners so you could flirt with the jocks while I did all the work.”

“Ah! I see what’s going on. You were jealous.”

“Jealous?”

“Of all the attention I got. Admit it. You’re still jealous I got elected Student Body President and you didn’t.”

“You got lucky. There were more guys than girls at school. Of course they voted for the prettier candidate. It was a no-brainer.”

Sam covered her open mouth to feign shock. “Did you just say something nice about me? What’s the catch, Lucas? Do you have a hidden police cam on you?”

“I said you’re prettier than me, but we both know I’m the more handsome one. Let’s not forget who got crowned Homecoming King.”

A genuine smile crossed Sam’s face for the first time that day. Lucas was still as charming as ever, in an annoyingly appealing kind of way. “You’re still such a dork. We both won that night. I was Homecoming Queen.”

“I remember. It was the one time we didn’t try to kill each other.”

“You almost maimed me with your gigantic lead feet. Come on, how hard is it to slow dance without stepping on your partner’s toes?”

“Apparently, very hard when the girl doesn’t allow you to lead.”

Sam crossed her arms and faked a laugh. “Ha! You just don’t know how to handle a strong, independent woman.”

“I think the word you meant to say was stubborn.”

Go West~Chapter 43

Chapter 43 Heading Home

Go West

by DiVoran Lites

Chapter Forty Three

Aldon

The trip down the mountain was easy until they got into a sloping meadow where the herd fanned out. There, without warning two horsemen came over a rise yelling and shooting their side-arms. The Herefords took off in a stampede, leaving no time to go after the hecklers.

Riding fast on both sides of the herd, the men set themselves to stopping the stampede. First they had to get them into a mill. It wouldn’t do for them to fall into a draw and break their bones or get lost and have to be rounded up all over again. Kenny and Aldon rode next to the head of the stampede slowly forcing them to change their course and double back. After a few heart-stopping moments, the beasts melted into a swirling, red and white tornado, and were forced to slow to a standstill. Eventually they settled down and began to graze. Aldon took the first deep breath he’d had since the stampede began.

“You can start on down again, Mr. Morgan,” Aldon rode to the wagon with Summer in tow. Do you mind riding Ellie’s horse, Mr. Morgan,” he said. He dipped his hat in thanks to the older man who got down off the wagon and mounted Summer.

Aldon tied Chief to the back of the chuck wagon, and took his place on the seat next to Ellie.

“I’m glad everyone is safe.” She touched his face with her warm, slender hand and all at once Aldon felt as full of ginger as a day old colt.

“Who were those men?” Ellie asked.

“Probably the squatters that were at the ranch with Enrico the other night,” Aldon gave the reins a shake to remind the mules they weren’t allowed to graze along the way.

Why would they do something like that? We could have been hurt or killed.” Ellie leaned against him as though seeking reassurance.

“Nah,” he shook his head and then looked directly at her. “It’s all in a day’s work.”

“But, what if one of us had died?” Her eyes pooled with unshed tears.

“That would have been a shame, don’t you think?” He put his arm around her shoulders and gave her a gentle squeeze.

“Why would it have been a shame?” He guessed maybe she was looking for reassurance.

“We’ve got a lot of living to do.” He clicked his tongue at the mules to move along now that they were on more even ground.

“But what’s the use of living if you’re not happy?” She asked.

“You’re not happy?” He hadn’t known that. He’d thought she was just mad at him.

“Not really,” she answered rubbing her hand on her jeans.

“Don’t you know? It’s, it’s…” there was a sob in her voice…because we’re at odds with each other.”

“You may be at odds with me, but I’m not at odds with you,” he said.

“You’re not?” She found a handkerchief in the jacket pocket and dabbed at her eyes.

“Haven’t you noticed who has been doing the ignoring?” He pulled the brim of his hat down a quarter of an inch.

“You walked off when I was trying to talk to you after church.”

“All right, I’m here now. What did you want to say?” Aldon pushed the hat back a bit and gave her his full attention.

“Having men fight over me was embarrassing.” She put her hands over her face.

“Didn’t I tell you I was sorry?” He thought he had explained how he felt, but obviously he hadn’t said the words she needed to hear. Would dealing with this woman ever become easy and commonplace? He doubted it but he knew he’d keep on trying.

“Out here we call a man responsible for his own actions even if he’s sick or drunk.” Aldon, shifted and wrapped his hand around hers. He pulled it to the region of his heart which seemed to be fluttering in his chest.

“Besides, you could have hurt him.” Ellie’s hand cuddled into his.

“There’s no harm in a bully getting hurt if he’s misbehaving, especially toward a lady like yourself.” He knew he sounded gruff.

“Is that what you think he is… a bully?” She tugged, but he held on to her hand.

“Maybe, but I have to be honest with you, I wasn’t sorry about interfering with that young man.” She tried again to pull away, but he went on talking. “I was, though, very sorry it upset you. I know fighting isn’t right or good, but sometimes men must look after women and…

“Are you saying I don’t know how to look after myself?” Ellie’s voice rose slightly.

“Anyhow, I never hit him. He passed out while I was dragging him away.” He tried to tell her the truth, hoping she’d listen.

“You didn’t hit him? But he was unconscious when you threw him in the pick-up.”

“No ma’am, I wouldn’t hit a shrimp like him. You ever heard of, pick on somebody your own size?” Aldon shook his head amazed at her lack of understanding. “Besides, why do you care what other people think?”

“You don’t care what people think of you?” She asked.

“I care what you think.” He gently rested their joined hands on the seat.”

“Why?” She sighed.

“First ‘cause you’re a good woman.”

“What else?”

“You’re easy on the eyes.” He flashed her a smile.

“You like the way I look?” Ellie, who was sitting hip to hip with him scooted a bit closer. Knowing he’d fall off if he budged, he sat as still as if he were watching a butterfly hover over a flower.

“Sure I do.” Maybe they were getting somewhere now. He held his breath.

“And?” Her voice went up on a singsong note.

“I got fond of you.” He gently squeezed her hand.

“Why did you stop talking to me, then? People can’t read each other’s minds. We’ve got to communicate.”

“Everything I said seemed to make things worse.”

She thought and nodded. He wondered if she might be getting angry all over again.

Aldon turned loose of her hand, removed his hat, scratched his head, leaving tufts of champagne colored hair sticking up like bull horns on the front of his head, and put the hat back on over them. Silence fell and after a long haul to the ranch, the mules pulled the wagon into the barn.
