I’m Recovered but Still a Little Crazy

In 2015 I released the last two books in my Seasons of Faith series. After spending a little over four years with these characters I feel as if I am moving away from dear friends. I have a number of other stories that have been begging to be told, but that hasn’t made it any easier to move on. Spending time with Lizzie, Ian, Jeffrey, Michelle, and Stephen is comfortable. They aren’t predictable, but I had developed a relatively clear picture of their future. In fact, there have been a couple of ideas for new stories with some of these characters that started developing at the edge of my mind as this series wound down.

Seasons of Faith, By Beck

Shortly after I finished Christmas Vows and had everything in place for its release, I became very sick. I didn’t know a body could take in as many antibiotics as mine did and still not get better. Between the medicine and the natural immune system reaction, I was exhausted and felt unable to connect with anything beyond a surface level. I knew I needed to get started on my next book, but I simply couldn’t focus on anything more complex than a formulaic television show.  I’m pretty sure I have now seen every Hallmark Channel Christmas movie.

In January I began to regain my strength only to have it sapped out of me through extra hours at the day job. My energy languished until the last week of the month when I had the chance to get together with my friend Mike for a couple hours of conversation. He’s a musician and has been honing his photography skills over the past few years. A couple of years after we first met, we spent hours creating a multi-media show, maybe not to rival Epcot’s Illuminations but to reflect it in some ways. The plan was for Mike to take this show to a resort area in New Hampshire he’d performed at in the past and then maybe on the road to other venues. We’d work until three or four in the morning and never get tired. Getting together with him always seems to energize me and renew the creative spark, even if we aren’t creating something.

Ideas began to percolate in my mind and by the time I sat down at my computer, I was ready to start writing again. Virginia is my current project. This will be the third book in the Coastal Chronicles.

While this book will have many of the characters from Jessie and will carry on some of that storyline, it will still be a book that stands on its own.  I grabbed snatches of time and started to age Virginia and Jessie, but I still wasn’t sure where the new book would start.

Now, here’s how I know I’m truly recovered from my November illness. Driving home from a day of shopping with my mom, a scene started to form in my mind. A couple of days later I was at the computer again and the original scene grew into three chapters. I’m now thinking about the story and wondering what the characters are doing, even when I’m at the day job. My commute is more exciting because I’m starting to see the world through Virginia and Jessie.  I feel alive again and can’t wait for my next vacation so I can devote myself to writing. So, if you see me walking down the street with a silly grin on my face, don’t worry, I’m not crazy, I’m just a writer.

Don’t Miss this Fall Into Reading Sale

Fall Into Reading Banner

Happy fall! Can you believe it’s fall already? I know I can’t. Here in Florida, this summer seems to go on and on. As my northern friends (anyone north of Jacksonville, Florida) batten the hatches and prepare for winter, I’m still wearing flip-flops. About now, I think some chilly weather, a nice warm fire and the perfect book would be fantastic.

If you are looking for the perfect book,  I have just the thing for you!

A bunch of authors and I collaborated in putting together a “Fall Into Reading” sale. The first page on the website has all the books on sale categorized by genre. Some are free, and others are discounted. If you want to find other clean books that aren’t necessarily on sale, check out the second page.

I hope you have an awesome fall!

I am excited to have my award winning novel, Jessie in the sale for 99¢.

It is usually $4.99!

Winner of the Patrick D. Smith Literary Award, Grace Award and a Shelf Unbound Notable Book for 2014, Jessie is a tender coming of age story that chronicles the lives of the four Cole brothers growing up in the turbulent 1960s.

Lizzie’s Wedding Journal- Wedding Dress

Wedding Journal;

I finally found it! I mentioned before how many wedding dresses I admired and a number of them even looked fabulous on me, but when I put this one on, I just knew it was the one. This may have been the hardest part of planning the wedding. Every time I tried something on, I wondered what mom would have thought of it. I tried on one dress that felt very 1950s. I liked it quite a bit and felt rather chic in it, but I swear I heard mom telling me I wasn’t Donna Reed. The princess dresses were pretty, one in a pale pink was particularly nice, but they weren’t me. I’ve never been a real girly girl.

After the my parents’ accident I was overwhelmed by all the things I would miss out on with them. I thought I’d moved past all of that but now I think I locked away the emotions. Getting married has unlocked several doors and I find myself thinking about mom and dad all the time. I wasn’t the little girl who played dress up and dreamed about my wedding day. Mom and I never really talked about it either. I wonder if she had dreams for my wedding. I hope she would be happy with the choices I’ve made so far.

I’ve spent a lot of time flipping through her wedding album the past couple of weeks. While my dress isn’t anything like hers, I somehow feel it’s exactly what she would have chosen for me. Stephanie and Mona are the only ones who’ve seen it and I want to keep it that way as long as possible. If you want to see it you will just have to come to the wedding : )

Lizzie’s Wedding Journal~The Venue

We met with Pastor Donovan this weekend and he seems as excited about this wedding as we are. He said he’s never heard of a proposal like ours and was touched to hear our story. I had forgotten about the prayer chapel we have on the campus. He took us to look at it after we finished talking. It’s perfect! He said it can accommodate 150 people and I can’t imagine we’ll have that many guests. There is a lovely stained glass of the nativity that made me certain this was the right place for our ceremony since it will be so close to Christmas.

Finding a place for the reception has been harder. There is an Italian-style country club outside Orlando that I loved, but they are booked almost two years out. It probably would have been a bit fancier than we want anyway. We must have visited close to two dozen places around town before we found something we both liked and that had an opening in December. The Avalon Grove Inn is beautiful.  Originally it was a small, family owned packing house for citrus. In the early seventies it was purchased from the family and renovated as an Inn. Some of the original grove is still maintained, but most of it has been lost to freezing temperatures over the years. The banquet room has hardwood floors and the rafters are all exposed wood beams in the same espresso color. When we were there it was decorated for another wedding, with white lights wrapped around the beams, and draped with white organza. The walls are a warm golden-yellow and at the end of the room is a fireplace surrounded by large stones. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this place before . We stumbled on it when we were driving around Winter Park. It’s less than twenty minutes from the church and has plenty of parking in an adjacent field where they had to remove a large portion of the original orange grove. Photos of some of the other places I visited are on my Pinterest board.

The catering manager is an absolute gem. She and I hit it off right away. I can’t wait to start working with her on the menu and the linens. She had some great ideas as soon as we told her our date. I think I will invite her to the next Concierge Club dinner, or maybe I should wait until after the wedding. She might feel uncomfortable mixing business and pleasure, but I know she’ll fit right in.

If I could just decide on who I can ask to be my bridesmaids, then I could start thinking about their dresses.
