Friday Reads~Beautiful Wreck

Well friends, we made it. It is Friday! That means it’s time to get our #FridayReads on and we have a fantastic author interview to share.  A big welcome  and congratulations to CeeCee James! She released the third book of her Wrecked and Yours Second Chances trilogy this week. Let’s get the interview started.

I enjoy reading novels that are part of a series. Tell our readers what your series is about.

The series is about love, secrets and navigating life. It’s romantic, uncertain and messy, like life often is. It describes their season to make a choice, “look at life honestly and deal with it, or continue to run away.” CeeCee absolutely loved writing it, and hopes it resonates with you because everyone has an important story of what they’ve overcome.

The first two novels of your series have dramatic titles, Wrecked and Yours and Out of the Wreckage. Book three has a sweeter title, Beautiful Wreck. To me that indicates the characters carry over and grow in each book.

Is Beautiful Wreck intended to be a stand alone novel or can it be read as a stand alone?

A Beautiful Wreck is written to be a stand alone, this sweet romance is all about hope restored.

I just happen to have the blurb: 😀

Her love may heal him, but his secret may destroy her.

One terrifying, emotional mission to return a family heirloom sends Cassie on an unexpected search for the person she never knew she needed.

Luke is tough, strong, and was once the best cop in town. Until the mob took away the one person he ever wanted. Now he’s trapped in fear over the man he’s become.

Cassie wants to bring him redemption, but fears she will never open her heart again. Each is the only one who can understand the other. If they’d just let their walls down.

Now to the part my mother enjoys, questions about the author. (She claims she is curious rather than nosy).

What influenced your decision to embark upon the insane journey of becoming an author?

My journey as an author first started as a child who loved to read. Growing up in a household that was often painful, in and out of foster care, I made my escape in several favorite books, who continue to be favorites to this day.

I am sure our readers would like to know which books and authors are your favorites. I know I would!

My first favorite that is near and dear to my heart is the James Herriot All Creatures Great and Small series. Those four books made me laugh, cry, and feel like there was a place of goodness and hope still in this word that set me on my own personal journey to find that place. He was an amazing author.

My second favorite books are the C.S. Lewis series, The Chronicles of Narnia. Yes! Still a favorite. It was here I saw other kids escape to new lands, and I lived vicariously through them. They reminded me to be brave, and continue to look for the beauty and whimsy in the world. I adored reading them out loud to my own children, over cups of hot cocoa.

As an adult, my favorites have gone far and wide. But nothing has yet measured up to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. His world building skills continue to hold me in awe.

Those are some of my favorites too. I devoured The Chronicles of Narnia.

No interview is complete without the official author bio.

Courageous

Have you ever been forced to relinquish control? I mean, really forced. As in, there’s simply no option other than to let go. All that seemed certain now feels shaken.

During my freshman year in college, my residence hall ventured on a team building exercise spelunking in a PA cavern. One by one, we crawled into the small opening in the ground while the person in front of us ebbed into darkness.

Probably not the best activity for someone who might be overly just a tad on the claustrophobic side. So of course, the first thing I did inside was jolt on my flashlight and grip my little source of security like a lifeline. As long as I could see in front of me, the narrow confinement was somewhat bearable.

The deeper our guides led us into the heart of the cave, the more intricate the tunneled passageways became. At one point, I thought we might’ve stepped onto the set of The Goonies. It was even sort of fun.

Until someone at the top of the line instructed everyone to pass up our flashlights.

The lights went out. I’m talking utter darkness. No more security. No control. Instant panic. And like so many times in life, when circumstances strip away the familiar, I faced a choice. Trust or not. Give in to fear or grapple for courage. Stand upon what I’ve known to be true in the light or cower to doubt when darkness rushes in.

And let’s be real, the courageous choice doesn’t come easily. But maybe that’s the point.

Whenever I read stories about courage, I’m reminded that bravery isn’t necessarily about vanquishing fear or performing valiant feats. I think real courage is found in everyday choices. When we’re standing in complete darkness, with fear pressing in from all angles, and still we choose to walk by faith.

That’s the kind of courage that inspires me. And it’s one of the main reasons I get so excited about inviting you to join Emma in this inspiring story about real love, costly choices, and the courage to fight for what you believe in.

It’s real. It has to be. Twenty-two-year-old college student Emma Matthews gained too much ground last year for it all to be a dream. She has an engagement ring on her finger to prove it. Not to mention an internship she’s made for.

After a summer of overcoming her fears, Emma can’t afford for the news she just received to shake her. Not when it might jeopardize her future with Riley. And not when the kids in downtown Portland are counting on her to keep the center’s doors open. With the added strain of a broken relationship and an unexpected friendship reminding her what’s at stake, what other choice does she have?

But as mounting danger compromises her safety, friction intensifies until the risk of keeping her promise threatens all she’s fought to believe. Caught in a moment when every light in her life goes out, Emma must find the courage to lead her heart no matter what it costs her.

Verona is a bottom feeder. She is the one mer in her clan who is considered the ugliest and least intelligent. Growing up with the constant bullying and abuse wasn’t the worst of what her kind had in store for her. At seventeen years old, she must now endure “The Reckoning.”

The scales will measure her worth to her clan. Will she endure thirty days as a land-walker to gather information and knowledge to appease her clan and return a valued member? Will she wait three years, until she is twenty, and find a mer of her kind to accept her and marry her? Or will she suffer exile for the rest of her life?

EXCERPT

TO KEEP FROM SCREAMING, I bite hard on my lip. The copper mixture of blood and saltwater mingles on my tongue. Mer claws rake against my back. The barnacles on the post to which I’m tied stab me in the chest. Pain sets my body on fire. Everything burns. I squeeze my eyes shut tight and keep my silence.

“Ugly.”

“Repugnant.”

“Unsightly.”

“Ignorant.”

“Bottom Feeder.”

Each word cuts as deep in my flesh as the physical wounds my clan inflicts. It can’t last long. I can endure this. As soon as the sharks catch scent of my blood they will come, and the Mer will scatter.

The world spins around me like a whirlpool. My breaths come quick and shallow, my heart pounds faster in my ears. Each second is an eternity, until I realize fresh wounds are not adding to the burning in my skin.

The elder’s sharp tongue whispers in my ear. “Now you will be measured.”

My wrists fall free of the post as he cuts the ties.

Exile. My Reckoning has begun.
