What to do when feeling overwhelmed.

Life ain’t all roses. Did God say that? I think He did

The other morning, hubby and I walked hand in hand to the park for our morning exercise stroll. “It’s going to be a stressful day,” he said, “got a report to finish and don’t have all the information…”

He went on and on. Then, as we always do while we walk, we prayed together.

A bit ashamed to admit this, but once the “holy” moment faded, I realized that life stinks sometimes. Yes, it does. Stuff comes up all the time. If it’s not the stress at work, it’s the illness that keeps us awake. Or the uncertainty of the future. Or broken relationships. Or kids who disappoint us. And our brain nearly explodes trying to figure it all out. And when, on top of it all, another glitch shows up, the red light “overwhelmed” light comes on the dashboard of our life.

But that’s when we either let pitiful tears flow or we invite wisdom in—the wisdom in Isaiah 43 where God invites us to believe, to cling to, to embrace when feeling overwhelmed, drained and crushed by the stuff in life:

  1. Life is going to be rough sometimes. Expect that. Situations will threaten to push us into panic because fear has shown up. But here’s what God says about that: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine” (Isaiah 43:1).
  2. If we belong to Him, is there any doubt He will take care of us?“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you…” and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you” (Isaiah 43:2a). Have you known rivers of pain? They don’t seem to stop. But as difficult as the navigating can be, we can be sure we’ll pass through them. And never, never alone. God promised to accompany us.
  3. “When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze” (Isaiah 43:2b).Aren’t you glad He never said, “You’re a Christian, you’ll never experience fires.” Instead, He knows we’ll face them. But He has the solution. When the heat of adversity is inevitable. His Word to shield is attainable. And here’s why: God says: “For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…” (Isaiah 43:3).

He’s our God, with all His power, with all His might, with all His love, He’s our God. Peace when overwhelmed is His gift wrapped in reassurance, giving us the green light to peace.

Father, thank you for your power at work in my life. I will not fear when life becomes overwhelming. When I seem to drown in troubles, burned by anxiety, or swept by the rivers of struggles. You are with me. You’re my perfect shield and my constant protector. In Jesus’ name, I thank you. Amen.

What has overwhelmed you lately?

Christmas Reading

Christmas wisemen01

Christmas is my favorite time of the year for reading. The stories are filled with hope, joy and often romance. Last year I enjoyed reading Noelle’s Golden Christmas by Tamie Dearen, (You can read me review here) so when I learned she was releasing another Christmas novel, I jumped at the chance to share it with you.

screen-shot-2016-12-07-at-9-43-20-pm

This Christmas, Haley Martin may be harder to catch than her runaway dog.

Haley has a chance at her dream job working for Holiday, Inc. There’s only one drawback. Her ex-boyfriend, Gavin Holiday is her supervisor.

Seeing Gavin again makes her heart pound and her soul ache, yet Haley knows he deserves someone better. And her secret crisis of faith is only one of the reasons.

Add one very recalcitrant Basset Hound to all her other problems, and it looks like Haley is going to have a real hangdog holiday.

In the spirit of Hallmark Movies, this inspirational romantic comedy tells the story of two young believers, struggling to find faith and love in the midst of adversity.

I have to tell you, I love this book. The author created characters you can’t help loving as they tug at your heart in one chapter then  make you smile, and if you own a Bassett Hound, make you laugh. The story has all the drama and romance  a reader of Christmas novels could want with the added bonus of honest insight into the complexity of learning to not only talk about faith but making it a living, breathing part of one’s life.

Bio:

author-squareTamie Dearen has been married to her very romantic husband since 1982. They have two beautiful daughters, two amazing son-in-laws, and one awesome grandson. She plays piano, flute, harmonica, keyboards, and guitar, and loves composing and art. And she hates housework. A dentist in private practice for thirty years, Tamie stays busy playing on her church’s praise team and teaching graduate students each week. In her spare time, she escapes to the world of books.

I am including links to all of Tamie’s books as well as her contact information. You might want to sign up for her newsletter too. She always seems to have something new to share or a giveaway going on.

Good news!

This wonderful author has released a holiday novel last year too. Be sure to check it out.

What Reviewers are saying

“Definitely worth reading.“-Amazon Reviewer

“The author makes great use of his setting offering many rich details”-Amazon Reviewer

“I loved the writing and the story. Then [sic] ending is unexpected and inevitable at the same time. “-Goodreads Reviewer

I asked the author if he would answer my Friday Reads questions, just for fun and he was gracious enough to agree!

 1. Tell our readers why they should choose your novel as their Friday Read.

I had three purposes in writing this book. One was to tell stories that need to be told. Two, I want to make a living from writing (or at least supplement my living). And three, I wanted to bring back the dime novels of the late 1800’s and Frontier Preacher is consistent with their length and pacing. One of the things that made those novels so successful was their length. Now in a time where people are pushing for longer, longer, longer, I endeavored to tell an entire story without the fluff. Most people find it a short read, and a compelling one from what they tell me.

2.What is the book’s backstory, what inspired you?

  1. It started when I began my research into the history of the congregation I grew up in. It is one of the older American Restoration churches in the nation which is strange as most of the old congregations are in the Bible belt and Texas. But it was the railroad that brought the church to Wyoming and I wanted to know more about them. As I researched I branched off into other areas (as any Wikipedia user knows is inevitable) and found rich stories that I had never heard told.

So I set out as a goal to take all of those stories and make them into a single cohesive narrative. Most of the events in the book occurred at one time or another in different places. One of my favorite, the one where a Baptist preacher is shot at for fun, happened in a small town in Kansas.

I transported it all to Gillette, the town I grew up in for three reasons. (That’s getting to be a theme with me…) They say write what you know, so I did. I also love my home town and want others to see it through my eyes. And the last reason, and most important, I know the people of Gillette are good, solid people. They stand a cut above the rest and were perfect for the story I needed.

3. Who were your favorite authors as a child and teen?

I read anything and everything I could get my hands on. That meant reading things too old for me sometimes and things over my head a lot of the time. To choose an author is like choosing my favorite food. What day is it? Richard Adams and Watership Down changed the way I looked at story telling. Mark Twain and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn made me question the world around me. (I had to read it and do a book report on it over summer vacation, when I was nine, for a punishment. Yes I had a teacher as a dad. Why do you ask?) George Orwell’s 1984 made me…I shouldn’t talk about that here– I mean there is nothing to talk about. Ever. We’ve always been at war with Eastasia.

4. Imagine a big name author that you love is reading and raving about your book. What would your reaction be and who would you tell?

I don’t want to sound too cynical here but I would be focusing on getting a review and advertising from them. I mean, it would be cool, but life (and sales window’s) is too short to be star struck. But I would be calling my mom like crazy.

Thank you for these interesting answers. Growing up, I read constantly too. Now let’s talk something we all like:

Meditation Musing~The Shepherd

Waterfall

The Shepherd by DiVoran Lites

God Speaks of His Love and Care

Beloved, I am your shepherd. I know what you need. Look around you and see the green pastures, the lush green grass? That is your place to rest a while before you get back to work. And over there is a pool of clear, fresh water. When you are rested you may continue on the trail laid out before you. Watch for the arrows that show you the way to go.

Your trail goes through sunshine and through shade. Sometimes the light grows dim and you wonder if you will ever be able to see to move on. Be not afraid, I am with you. I will always be with you no matter how you feel or what you do. Troubles fade as I carry you through. One thing you need to know is that although the enemy wants nothing more than to destroy you, you can resist him and he will run away from you. I am always here to protect you and to make you powerful in my Spirit.

There now, we are coming out of the dark valley. On the side of the mountain you see a picnic area with a long redwood covered with a white damask cloth. All your friends and loved ones are there.

The chef has prepared favorite dishes and given you the appetite to enjoy them. Your enemies are furious because you reject their suggestions and trust in Me.

You are a blessed person. I give you the strength to bear anything you must. Look, here is the cup that overflows with all the good things such as love, peace, joy. You are thirsty, drink it down and it will be health and healing to your bones.

Here are the two black lab pups that want to play with you: Goodness and Mercy. They will follow you all the days of your life and you will all dwell with me in my house forever.

Psalm 23, John 10: 14-15.

Music

Note: I just discovered that all the songs in the Broadman Hymnal are played on piano in the old fashioned way on this site. You can find words on the other one. For years, I’ve wondered what some of the songs I didn’t know must sound like and now, I can find out. I just have to figure out how to use the site. Happy Trails.
