Life Is All About Choices…and Consequences

We are excited to welcome Christian author Lillian Duncan to Kitchen Chat to share her latest release.

Life is all about choices…and consequences.

That’s what my new book, BROKEN TRUST, is all about. The main character is Chrysalis better known as Chryssie. A chrysalis is another name for a cocoon and a cocoon is one of the necessary steps for a caterpillar to become a butterfly.

Chryssie wants to soar like a butterfly but because of a lifetime of bad choices she seems to be stuck in the caterpillar stage. She knows good choices can propel her forward but it’s not always easy to make the good choices.

And isn’t that true for all of us? We know that eating that second piece of cake isn’t a good choice but… We know that buying that expensive “whatever” isn’t a good choice but…We know that arguing with our spouse about insignificant things isn’t a good choice but…

Lots of times we don’t even think about what we’re doing, we are just stuck in a pattern of bad choices and then complain because we don’t like what’s happening in our life. If you want to change something in your life, start making better choices.

Chryssie is only days away from graduating when she witnesses a murder. Common sense would tell her to call the police, but she’s so focused on taking her final exam for nursing school, she decides to take the easy way out—again.

Life is all about choices…and consequences.

Chryssie makes a bad choice—and even worse consequences follow! Her easy way out not only puts everything she’s worked so hard for in jeopardy but her very life!

Each day we make hundreds of choices—they may not be life and death choices like Chryssie, but they will either move us toward our goals or away from our goals. It’s not easy to break patterns and bad habits but it can be done—one choice at a time.

Life is all about choices…and consequences.

Savior, Like a Shepherd

Have you ever wondered what it was like for orphans born in the Wild West? Faith Blum has a new book that explores the life of three orphans born during that time. She’s with us today to tell us a little about her book. Make sure you read to the end to see the super fun giveaway she has going on, too!

About the Book

The ground shook and a rumble sounded through the air as the train squealed to a stop. Maybe, just maybe, I could carry someone’s bags without the porter taking notice. And then there was the even bigger maybe: Maybe I could get enough money to at least buy a crust of bread for Trevor and Tabitha to share.

I hid behind the boxes in the freight yard and kept one eye on the porter, and the other on the second class passenger car. The porter had his attention on the first class car, so I slipped into the gathering crowd.

Titus Hine has always taken care of others. First in protecting his brother and sister from the men his mother entertained. Even more so after her death, when the townspeople refused to help the orphans of a town prostitute. He’s been protector and provider, despite the hardships. He’s learned that no one will help, no one cares and if he wants to survive he’ll have to rely on his own strength not just for himself but his family as well.

Then a stranger shows him the kindness and help no one else seems willing to. Between her kindness and the lecture she gives the Christian Leaders, Titus’s life takes an unexpected turn for the better. With help and provision from the local believers things should be easier, his burdens are lifted. So why does it feel like life is spinning out of control?

Can Titus learn that while man may fail him there is One who will never fail? Can he learn to allow God to be the Shepherd of his life and lead him? Or will life continue to push him every which way?

Character Spotlight: Tabitha

Name: Tabitha Hine

Age: 5 (at beginning of the book)

Background:

Tabitha was born to Clarice Hine on August 25, 1875. She was the third illegitimate child Clarice had by a third man. Clarice loved all of her children, even though she couldn’t be with them as much as she would have liked. Tabitha was raised by her two brothers.

When their mother died, Trevor took care of Tabitha while Titus tried to earn some money for food. Tabitha thought Trevor was the smartest boy ever. She loved people easily, even if they treated her poorly, but especially if they were kind to her.

Personality: Defiant, high-spirited, outgoing, probably ESTP

Personal Goal: To become a wife and mother

Friday Reads-Reversal Zone

Happy Friday friends! We are excited to be a part of the Reversal Zone blog tour. I don’t believe we have featured a science fiction novel  yet. This one is part of a series and we love series,,don’t we? Be sure to enter to win signed copies of the first three novels!

reversal-zone-banner

J. Grace Pennington has published four science fiction novels. They each have a unique bent to them, but this one is very different. Each book is a standalone, but as with any series, you get more of the story if you read them all in order. In Reversal Zone, the main character, Andi Lloyd, becomes the only one who can save the ship and crew. Can she do it in time?

About the Book

Nothing is as it should be.
After weeks of boredom, Andi is excited when the Surveyor is called upon to rescue a freighter that mysteriously vanished in uncharted space. Excitement quickly turns to unease when the ship encounters an unknown phenomenon—a cloud that appears not to exist. But with the freighter’s crew in danger, the Surveyor has no choice but to venture into unknown territory.
As soon as they enter the cloud, its unstable effects wreak havoc on the ship. They’re flying blind. Every piece of equipment is malfunctioning. And every member of the crew is unable to think straight or act like themselves—except Andi.
Now she’s expected to guide them through the predicament with no previous command experience and no one to turn to for support. And with each passing hour, it becomes clear that if they don’t escape the cloud soon—they won’t escape it at all.

Friday Reads Interview

  1. Tell our readers why they should choose your novel as their Friday Read.

Firmament: Reversal Zone is a great Friday read for three basic reasons.

  1. a) It’s short. Reviewers have told me that they’ve read it in one to three sittings. So you don’t have to worry about using up your whole weekend.
  1. b) It’s twisty. My readers so far have reported there were multiple twists they didn’t see coming. Who doesn’t love a good twist?
  1. c) It’s clean. Unless you’re sensitive to some medical jargon and moderate peril, you should have nothing to worry about.

     1. d) Space. We all love space!

  1. e) The characters. I know I’m biased, but I love my characters—even if none of them are quite them selves this go-round.

(Okay, that’s five reasons. I thought of more while I was writing. But five reasons is better than three, amiright?)

  1. I agree, and they are excellent reasons. I’m sure our readers would like to know the book’s backstory, what inspired you?

Well, this is the fourth book in the series, so it’s partly inspired by the books that came before it. Other than that, I tend to be inspired by two types of “what if” scenarios. The first is “What if this idea were taken to its logical conclusion?” and the second is “What if this character were thrown into this particular situation?”

In Firmament: Reversal Zone, I was inspired by both. I wanted to explore the idea that we are responsible for our choices, no matter how we feel, and I wanted to explore what it would look like if my characters behaved in completely different ways than they usually do. It was great fun, and I have to say this might be my favorite of the series so far.

  1. Who were your favorite authors as a child and teen.

Too many and too varied to count, as per the norm, but among them were C. S. Lewis, L. M. Montgomery, Louisa May Alcott, Donald J. Sobol, Dr. Seuss, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and of course I loved Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys! I also loved Elsie Dinsmore, but we won’t talk about that.

(As an aside, I can still recite much of Dr. Seuss. I pride myself on it. People love it when my brother and I just start spouting Seussian tongue-twisters for no reason. Or when my sister and I recite selections from The Silver Chair and other Narnia books.)

4. Those are interesting authors! Now, imagine a modern day, big name author that you love is reading and raving about your book. Choose one of these reactions and explain why.

  1. Freak out and shake all over.
    b. Google everything you can find about your book and the author
    c. Call everyone you know to share your excitement
    d. Post immediately to Face Book so your friends can freak out with you.
    e. Begin to mentally compose a tweet to tell the world.

Hmm, it’s hard to choose just one. I would probably post immediately to Facebook to tell all my friends and family, because all of them have been such a huge part of my writing journey, and I would be eager to share the joy and excitement with them. But I would probably be freaking out and shaking all over while I did it.

I’m sure I would be shaking too!
