25 Days of Christmas!

Description

Many of us get caught up in the commercialization of Christmas. One way to prevent that is to focus on the reason for the season. Taking a few minutes each day with this different kind of devotional book will help your family think of others. Each day focuses on one word and includes a story from Daniel and Holly’s family, a Scripture reading with the devotional, the YouTube link to a Christmas Carol, and an activity that the entire family can be involved in.

Reviews

“We love it! You posted it just the right time. God’s providence!”

“My kids love it! Especially the song and the activity.”

“The kids like to read the verses during the devotional part. It has been a good way to get the whole family involved.”

Advent

Story

“I have a surprise for you kids,” Mom said as soon as Daniel and Holly walked in the door after school.

“What?” They both wanted to know.

“Follow me,” Mom requested as she walked toward the family room.

Two-year-old Evie followed along behind, clapping her hands and giggling.

“She must know what the secret is,” Daniel commented to Holly.

Holly laughed when Evie shouted, “Sec-et! Sec-et!”

Mom smiled as well. “That’s her new word for the day.”

Then Mom held up a box that had a bunch of what looked like little doors. Twenty-five of them to be exact. They each had a number.

“What’s that?” Daniel asked.

“It’s an Advent calendar. Each day we’ll open one. Behind each door is a treat for each of you and a word we can talk about to help us prepare for Christmas.”

“Can we open one now?” Holly wanted to know.

“You may.” Mom pointed to the first door.

“Advent,” Holy read after she took out three small candies and handed one to Daniel and Evie.

“Advent is all about the days leading up to Christmas. We can talk about what Christmas really means and prepare our hearts to worship Christ.”

“Why did Jesus have to come to earth as a baby? Why couldn’t He come as a grown-up?” Daniel wondered as he picked up the baby Jesus from the Nativity set.

“Well, Jesus needed time to prepare, too. He needed to experience all the things we experience. He experienced what it was like to grow up, have a family and friends, and be tempted by sin just like the rest of us. No matter what problems we face in life, Jesus truly understands.”

“But I thought Jesus was perfect and never sinned?” Holly questioned.

Mom nodded her head. “He was perfect. He didn’t ever sin, but He still went through a lot of the same things we do. Because He lived a perfect and sinless life, that’s what made Him a suitable sacrifice for our sins. Only a perfect Man could pay the price for us.”

Daniel and Holly didn’t say anything. For a few moments, the only sound heard was Evie slurping her candy and quietly repeating, “Sec-et.”

Mom continued. “God had to prepare the world for Salvation to come in the form of His Son, Jesus. It wouldn’t happen overnight. It would take Jesus’ entire life time here on earth.”

Daniel, always the one who wanted to learn more, said, “I think this will be interesting.”

“I think this will be fun,” Holly gave her opinion.

“I think it will help prepare us all and help us to understand Christmas just a little bit better.”

Devotion

Read Matthew 25:1-13

This man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. Luke 2:25b-26

Advent is a time of preparation. The Christmas Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas. Many families, especially those with young children, have Advent calendars. Each day the children get to open a door, receive a little gift, or remove an object in the countdown for and in anticipation of Christmas.

Children, for the most part, look forward to Christmas because of the gifts they will receive. That’s not a bad thing, but we as adults, should have a much deeper anticipation of Christmas. We take the time to buy and wrap gifts, prepare food, clean the house for guests, buy new outfits, attend parties, etc. But how much time do we put into meditating on the actual birth of Christ and worshipping Him?

Many years, at least in our household, we spend time putting up the tree and decorating it, only to ignore it. We more often than not, sit in the room with the TV. Unfortunately, that’s often the way we are with God as well. We accept Him as Savior. We attend church on Sundays. Other than that, we pretty much ignore Him, too.

This Christmas, in anticipation of the celebration of His birth, let’s focus on Him a little more throughout the month. Let’s prepare our hearts by reflecting on why He came to earth.

Christmas will be that much more special when we focus on the true Reason for the Season.

Activity

This activity will take some extra planning. Get together as a family; you can even invite your extended family members to take part in this one as well. Choose a family that is in need; try to find a specific need if possible. Gather together money to give to that family for the specific need that they have. If possible, try not to let them know where their Christmas gift is coming from. That makes it all the more exciting for both them and you.

The Student and the Slave

It’s good to have author Annie Douglas Lima on our blog today to share the good news of her latest release, The Student and the Slave. We appreciate her patience while our site was down. Those who hack small sites like this one, just for fun are pretty low in my opinion.

Let’s begin with an except from The Student and the Slave.

In this excerpt, the household manager lectures Steene for failing to show proper respect to his owner.

“As his slave, you cannot treat Raymond the way you did,” Winston said. “You will go upstairs, humbly apologize, and let him know that from now on you will follow every one of his orders immediately. And as soon as his hand feels better, you will give him the extra practice he requires of you.”

“I will do no such thing!” Steene could hear his voice rising.

“You will do it, or else you will regret it. And then you will have to do it anyway.”

“Are you threatening me?”

“That kind of attitude will not be tolerated in this household. The lash is seldom employed here — most people are smart enough not to need it — but if a whipping is what it will take to teach you respect and obedience, then that’s what we’ll do.”

“Do you really want to take me on?” Deliberately, Steene looked the man up and down. “I work out every day.” Well, not so much since the surgery, but that wasn’t the point. “How often do you work out? Never, I’m guessing.”

Winston’s face had turned bright red. “You will submit to your punishment if you know what’s good for you.”

“You’re just a slave like I am! What gives you the idea that you’re some sort of big boss?” Steene felt his hands clenching into fists. “You don’t own me, and I highly doubt you’re physically capable of following through on your threats. And if you try it, I don’t think I’m the one who’s going to regret the encounter. So I suggest you go find a better use for your time than threatening people who are only doing what they have a legal right to do!”

He was yelling now, but he couldn’t help it. This whole world was so impossibly unfair. Whose bright idea was it that humans could own each other, anyway? Who decided that putting metal around people’s necks turned them into property? And who came up with the rule that anyone who tried to right that particular injustice for someone else deserved to suffer it himself?

Without another word, Winston turned on his heel and swept out of the room. Feeling as though he had won a small victory against the system, at least, Steene strode back to the couch and plopped down on it.

Everyone else was still staring at him. “You shouldn’t have said all that,” said Nelson. “He’s right that you’re going to regret it.”

“Mind your own business.” Steene turned his attention back to the TV

Take a look at this exciting new young adult action and adventure novel, The Student and the Slave, now available for purchase! This is the third book in the Krillonian Chronicles, after The Collar and the Cavvarach and The Gladiator and the Guard

The series is set in an alternate world that is very much like our own, with just a few major differences.  One is that slavery is legal there.  Slaves must wear metal collars that lock around their neck, making their enslaved status obvious to everyone. Another difference is the popularity of a martial art called cavvara shil.  It is fought with a cavvarach (rhymes with “have a rack”), a weapon similar to a sword but with a steel hook protruding from partway down its top edge.  Competitors can strike at each other with their feet as well as with the blades.  You win in one of two ways: disarming your opponent (hooking or knocking their cavvarach out of their hands) or pinning their shoulders to the mat for five seconds.

First, a Little Information about Books 1 and 2:

Book 1: The Collar and the Cavvarach

Bensin, a teenage slave and martial artist, is desperate to see his little sister freed. But only victory in the Krillonian Empire’s most prestigious tournament will allow him to secretly arrange for Ellie’s escape. Dangerous people are closing in on her, however, and Bensin is running out of time. With his one hope fading quickly away, how can Bensin save Ellie from a life of slavery and abuse?

Book 2: The Gladiator and the Guard

Bensin, a teenage slave and martial artist, is just one victory away from freedom. But after he is accused of a crime he didn’t commit, he is condemned to the violent life and early death of a gladiator. While his loved ones seek desperately for a way to rescue him, Bensin struggles to stay alive and forge an identity in an environment designed to strip it from him. When he infuriates the authorities with his choices, he knows he is running out of time. Can he stand against the cruelty of the arena system and seize his freedom before that system crushes him?

And now, The Student and the Slave, with another awesome cover by the talented Jack Lin

Book 3: The Student and the Slave

Is this what freedom is supposed to be like?
Desperate to provide for himself and his sister Ellie, Bensin searches fruitlessly for work like all the other former slaves in Tarnestra. He needs the money for an even more important purpose, though: to rescue Coach Steene, who sacrificed himself for Bensin’s freedom. When members of two rival street gangs express interest in Bensin’s martial arts skills, he realizes he may have a chance to save his father figure after all … at a cost.

Meanwhile, Steene struggles with his new life of slavery in far-away Neliria. Raymond, his young owner, seizes any opportunity to make his life miserable. But while Steene longs to escape and rejoin Bensin and Ellie, he starts to realize that Raymond needs him too. His choices will affect not only his own future, but that of everyone he cares about. Can he make the right ones … and live with the consequences?

Christmas Reading

Christmas wisemen01

Christmas is my favorite time of the year for reading. The stories are filled with hope, joy and often romance. Last year I enjoyed reading Noelle’s Golden Christmas by Tamie Dearen, (You can read me review here) so when I learned she was releasing another Christmas novel, I jumped at the chance to share it with you.

screen-shot-2016-12-07-at-9-43-20-pm

This Christmas, Haley Martin may be harder to catch than her runaway dog.

Haley has a chance at her dream job working for Holiday, Inc. There’s only one drawback. Her ex-boyfriend, Gavin Holiday is her supervisor.

Seeing Gavin again makes her heart pound and her soul ache, yet Haley knows he deserves someone better. And her secret crisis of faith is only one of the reasons.

Add one very recalcitrant Basset Hound to all her other problems, and it looks like Haley is going to have a real hangdog holiday.

In the spirit of Hallmark Movies, this inspirational romantic comedy tells the story of two young believers, struggling to find faith and love in the midst of adversity.

I have to tell you, I love this book. The author created characters you can’t help loving as they tug at your heart in one chapter then  make you smile, and if you own a Bassett Hound, make you laugh. The story has all the drama and romance  a reader of Christmas novels could want with the added bonus of honest insight into the complexity of learning to not only talk about faith but making it a living, breathing part of one’s life.

Bio:

author-squareTamie Dearen has been married to her very romantic husband since 1982. They have two beautiful daughters, two amazing son-in-laws, and one awesome grandson. She plays piano, flute, harmonica, keyboards, and guitar, and loves composing and art. And she hates housework. A dentist in private practice for thirty years, Tamie stays busy playing on her church’s praise team and teaching graduate students each week. In her spare time, she escapes to the world of books.

I am including links to all of Tamie’s books as well as her contact information. You might want to sign up for her newsletter too. She always seems to have something new to share or a giveaway going on.

Good news!

This wonderful author has released a holiday novel last year too. Be sure to check it out.

A Review and Blog Tour~Just a Closer Walk

JACW Banner

If you have read any mail order bride stories, you’ve probably noticed that even though the bride and groom never met each other, they are both genuinely good people. It’s a rare story that has a scam or a truly bad person either write or respond to the mail order bride advertisement. Faith Blum took that rare theme and wrote three novellas about five young ladies duped into becoming mail order brides only to find out the men they were supposed to marry weren’t what they had appeared in the letters. The first of those novellas just released on June 26th and Faith is here today to share a little about it.

About the Book

Just a Closer Walk_FrontI am weak, but Thou art strong/Jesus, keep me from all wrong/I’ll be satisfied as long/As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.

Katie and Joanna meet on a train headed to Cheyenne, Wyoming. They start talking and find out they are both headed there to become mail order brides. They quickly become good friends. When they get on a stagecoach with three other young women, Katie becomes suspicious. What is going to happen to them? Or is it really possible that nothing untoward is happening?

My Review of Just a Closer Walk

I have read other books by Faith Blum and enjoyed her stories of life in the old west. Mail order brides in the era of western expansion were a viable method for men in remote locations to secure a wife. The women who chose this adventure were brave souls or foolhardy, but the novels written about them always end in a match being made. In this novella, the author threw in a twist that leaves the women in the lurch. Fortunately, there are good people in the town who provide a safe place for Katie and Joanna. They each have a past, one a secret past and the other fleeing an odious suitor. The two soon become friends, sharing their fears as well as their dreams.  In the process of finding their place in town as well as love, their faith in Christ grows stronger as they encourage each other to seek God and grant Him control of their lives.
